First Coat Gatton
2017
Paying respects to Gatton’s history through language - words were selected in consultation with local linguist Madonna Thompson. Words depicted are from the Jagera language and are used to identify location:
‘Goori is like a trade language word and all the tribal groups across the regional society (share in common similar initiation and rules) use this word to identify themselves.
Goori is like saying your a South East Queenslander, to distinguish your regional ties and association, where as someone from just outside this social regional bloc may say they are Murri.
Yagara is a subset within the regional society made up of tribal groups and family clan sets.’
Mural features the Cyclopsitta diophthalma coxeni — Coxen’s Fig-Parrot, which is listed as an engendered species. Whilst there are no comprehensive records showing the extent of its habitat - its know distribution is mainly in South East Queensland.
