Cocoparra Orchids.
Based on the research and with the aid of the Griffith Library’s local collection this work depicts several varieties of spider orchids found in the Cocoparra Ranges including Caladenia Fitzgeraldii, Caladenia Tetaculata and Caladenia Concinna. Orchids are one of the most diverse flowers in the plant kingdom, Eric describing the species as “splitters'' explaining the reason for the abundance of endangered and rare varieties is due to the species rapid evolution capabilities.
Having a personal interest in depicting Australia’s endemic and endangered botany George was able to connect with local naturalist’s to discuss Griffiths unique ecosystem. Much of Griffiths natural environment has been adapted for agricultural production over the years Eric Whiting, a local botanist, worked with George outlining unique species that have now been relegated to roadsides and small pockets around the religion including in the Cocoparra Ranges. Eric co-authored "Wildflowers of the Narrandera and Cocoparra Ranges" alongside Rowena Whiting, a small publication that can be found in Griffith Library which outlines many of Griffiths native and endemic flora.
