MELB0URNE

ISPT Residency Melbourne CBD.

In early 2022 Property Group ISTP and Commercial Real Estate firm JLL offered the use of a double story empty retail space in Melbourne’s CBD to activate as a live art studio. Having typically worked on large-scale commissioned murals, the residency gave Rose the opportunity and space to experiment and define a studio art practice, free from the constraints of a client brief. Experimentations from the residency have resulted in an informal body of work that draws inspiration from multiple sources. Rose’s interests cover a range of art movements and their theories, from Abstract Expressionism, Op Art, and Minimalism, to Gestural, Generative, and Process Art, as well as Colour Theory. From the outset, a primary goal of Rose was to further explore her fascination with Colour Theory and create works that audiences could connect with visually and subconsciously; for the work to be experienced, rather than read. Most works feature her favourite signature gradients – highly pigmented, contrasting hues seamlessly blended together – paired with bold, gestural marks. The resulting visual effect plays on the senses, appearing to subtly pulse and vibrate. Within the works Rose repeats rounded motifs such as the arch and oval, however each mark is unique, the result of oversized brushes that she has constructed over time. As in her mural practice, she believes the process of creation is of equal importance to the result in success of each finished piece.
